Tramway is Scotland's premier arts venue with a European wide reputation. Originally built as a tram depot for the trams and horses, the building had operated as an industrial building before Glasgow City Council recognised its potential as an arts venue in 1989.
In June 1997 Glasgow City Council ran an invited competition to find an architect led Design Team. The brief outlined all the problems with the existing building and asked for a long-term improvement strategy for the building. Central to the design brief was the request that the industrial quality and "gritty" character of the building should be retained in any new work.
Winner of several awards including the prestigious Scottish Design Awards Architecture Grand Prix 2000.
